Down on the Upside is the fifth studio album from Soundgarden, originally released in 1996 and widely regarded as one of the band’s most adventurous and expansive releases.
Following the massive success of Superunknown, the band pushed their sound further into experimental territory while retaining the heavy riffs, unusual time signatures, and dark atmosphere that defined the Seattle grunge movement. The album blends crushing guitar work with psychedelic textures and acoustic moments, showcasing the full creative range of the band.
Down on the Upside was a major commercial success, debuting at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 and topping the charts in Australia and New Zealand. The album produced several standout singles including “Pretty Noose”, “Burden in My Hand”, “Blow Up the Outside World”, and the ferocious “Ty Cobb”.
