Atom Heart Mother, released in 1970, is the fifth studio album from Pink Floyd and one of the band’s most ambitious early works.
The album is best known for the sprawling 23-minute title suite, an experimental orchestral composition arranged by Ron Geesin and performed with brass, choir and full band. Blending progressive rock, avant-garde elements and sweeping symphonic arrangements, the piece represents one of the group’s most daring musical statements of the early 1970s.
The second side of the album showcases individual contributions from each band member, including Roger Waters' acoustic ballad “If”, Richard Wright’s nostalgic “Summer ’68”, and David Gilmour’s pastoral epic “Fat Old Sun.” The album closes with the surreal multi-part piece “Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast,” combining music, sound effects and spoken dialogue.
Featuring the iconic sleeve artwork of a lone cow photographed by Hipgnosis, Atom Heart Mother became Pink Floyd’s first UK No.1 album and remains a fascinating snapshot of the band during their experimental transition between the Syd Barrett era and the later progressive masterpieces.
