Razor-sharp tribute to the ultra-stylish 1980s–1990s French New Wave movement known as Cinéma du Look - and its unmistakably cool soundtracks.
Femme fatales with big guns, coolly efficient assassins, highly sexed and impossibly beautiful kleptomaniacs, Paris Métro signs, wet cobbled streets — and neon, always lots of neon. The visual aesthetics of the Cinéma du Look movement (early 1980s to early 1990s) were as important as the characters themselves.
Identified by critic Raphaël Bassan in 1989, Cinéma du Look primarily centred around three French directors: Jean-Jacques Beineix, Luc Besson and Leos Carax.
Often criticised for prioritising style over substance, the movement’s striking visuals and unmistakably 1980s soundtracks continue to influence modern cinema, including the work of Nicolas Winding Refn.
This album draws inspiration from the music of Éric Serra, Gabriel Yared and Vladimir Cosma, celebrating the bold fusion of high culture and pop culture that defined the era.
