The Last Samurai marked the 100th film score by legendary composer Hans Zimmer, and remains one of the most powerful works of his career.
Released in 2003 and starring Tom Cruise, the film tells the story of an American Civil War veteran who travels to Japan and becomes caught between the rising Imperial Japanese Army and the fading traditions of the samurai.
Zimmer’s score beautifully reflects this cultural and emotional conflict, blending sweeping orchestral themes with traditional Japanese instrumentation. The thunderous taiko drums drive the film’s battle sequences, while the haunting tones of the shakuhachi flute and delicate koto create moments of reflection and melancholy.
Often compared to Zimmer’s work on The Thin Red Line, the soundtrack balances powerful cinematic themes with long, contemplative passages, making it one of his most atmospheric and emotionally resonant compositions.
This release marks the first time the soundtrack has been available on vinyl, presented as a double LP housed in a gatefold sleeve and pressed on gold coloured vinyl, limited to 1000 copies.
