It’s hard to overstate the importance of Fanny's 1970 debut album.
For the first time, a group of women — sisters June and Jean Millington, Alice De Buhr and Nickey Barclay — wrote and performed their own songs, played their own instruments, and rocked just as hard as any band of the era.
As the first all-female band signed to a major label (Reprise), and working with producer Richard Perry, Fanny quickly became one of L.A.’s most talked-about acts, regularly performing at the Whisky a Go Go in front of rock’s elite.
Without a clear reference point at the time, the rock press often dismissed them — but Fanny would go on to become that reference, paving the way for future generations of artists including Joan Jett, Girlschool and Courtney Love.
They were truly the godmothers of women in rock. Girl power starts here.
