Coming to America - Original Motion Picture Score presents the world premiere release of Nile Rodgers' previously unreleased score to the beloved 1988 comedy starring Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall and James Earl Jones and directed by John Landis.
Following Prince Akeem of Zamunda as he travels to Queens, New York in search of a woman who will love him for himself rather than his royal status, Coming to America became one of Eddie Murphy's defining films. Combining romantic comedy, culture clash and an array of unforgettable characters, the film has remained a favourite for decades.
For his second collaboration with Eddie Murphy following Trading Places, director John Landis required music capable of moving between the film's comedy, romance and cultural contrasts. Renowned musician, songwriter and producer Nile Rodgers created an energetic thematic score combining African-influenced motifs with funk and rock elements alongside more traditional orchestration.
Best known as the co-founder of Chic and for his hugely influential work as a songwriter and producer, Rodgers brought his distinctive rhythmic sensibility to the film while adapting it to the demands of a full cinematic score. The music moves between the royal grandeur of Zamunda and Akeem's adventures in New York, giving the film a musical identity every bit as colourful as its characters.
This expanded CD from La-La Land Records and Paramount Pictures finally gives Rodgers' original score its own dedicated release. Alongside the main score presentation, it includes an extensive selection of bonus tracks, alternate versions, early demos and additional music from the film.
The programme includes "She's Your Queen to Be" performed by Paul Bates and multiple versions of the unforgettable "Soul Glo" performed by Christopher Max, alongside alternate score cues and previously unheard developmental material.
Produced by Dan Goldwasser and mastered by Doug Schwartz, the release also features in-depth liner notes by author Jeff Bond containing new comments from Nile Rodgers and director John Landis. Art design is by Dan Goldwasser.
Please note that "Mbube (Wimoweh)" was unavailable for licensing and is not included on this release.
