Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas stars Johnny Depp as journalist Raoul Duke and Benicio del Toro as his eccentric attorney, Dr. Gonzo. What begins as a trip to Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race rapidly descends into a chaotic journey through the excesses, paranoia and disillusionment of the American counterculture.

Directed by Terry Gilliam, the film combines extraordinary visual effects, dark humour and hallucinatory imagery to create a uniquely distorted vision of the American Dream. Although initially met with mixed reviews, it has since become a cult classic, celebrated for its uncompromising style and unforgettable performances.

Music plays a crucial role in establishing the film's atmosphere, with a soundtrack that moves between the psychedelic optimism of the 1960s, the mainstream pop of the early 1970s and the more confrontational sounds of punk rock.

Among the highlights are Jefferson Airplane's psychedelic classic "White Rabbit", The Yardbirds' "For Your Love" and Buffalo Springfield's atmospheric "Expecting To Fly". These recordings evoke the musical landscape of the counterculture era while reflecting the film's underlying themes of lost idealism and cultural upheaval.

Elsewhere, Bob Dylan's sprawling "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again", Brewer & Shipley's "One Toke Over The Line" and The Youngbloods' "Get Together" further explore the musical character of the period.

The soundtrack also embraces the film's more absurd and unpredictable moments, with selections including Tom Jones' "She's A Lady", Perry Como's "Magic Moments" and Debbie Reynolds' "Tammy". Their contrasting styles create a deliberately disorientating listening experience, mirroring the film's collision of psychedelic excess and conventional American culture.

Adding another dimension are three instrumental compositions from Tomoyasu Hotei and Ray Cooper, collectively titled "A Drug Score". These atmospheric pieces provide a darker, more experimental counterpoint to the familiar songs, reinforcing the film's increasingly surreal atmosphere.

The collection concludes with Dead Kennedys' irreverent interpretation of "Viva Las Vegas", providing a suitably anarchic ending to a soundtrack that refuses to follow conventional expectations.

More than a collection of songs from a film, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack offers a musical journey through the optimism, excess and eventual disillusionment of an extraordinary period in American cultural history.

Originally unavailable on vinyl, this 21st Anniversary Edition presents the soundtrack across two 180g Black vinyl records, housed in a gatefold sleeve.
